Reduced to a half-length image and placed in a domestic setting, the composition is further altered by the addition of Joseph.

alb3636668 Portrait of a Carthusian. Artist: Petrus Christus (Netherlandish, Baarle-Hertog (Baerle-Duc), active by 1444-died 1475/76 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. (29.2 x 21.6 cm); painted surface 11 1/2 x 7 3/8 in. (29.2 x 18.7 cm). Date: 1446.Christus places his sitter in the corner of a warmly illuminated room and enhances the quality of his "real" presence by the fly resting momentarily on the fictive frame. The leading painter of Bruges following Jan van Eyck's death in 1441, Christus moves beyond the flat neutral backgrounds of his predecessor's portraits. The illusionistic inscription underscores the verisimilitude of the portrait, declaring: "Petrus Christus made me in the year 1446.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3621261 The Crucifixion. Artist: Master of the Berswordt Altar (German, Westphalian, active ca. 1400-35). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 17 in. (59.7 x 43.2 cm). Date: ca. 1400.These panels were among thirty scenes of an extensive narrative cycle that formed part of a large altarpiece from the Neustädter Marienkirche in Bielefeld, Westphalia. They were created two decades before panel painting underwent a qualitative revolution in the art of Jan van Eyck, Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden, who achieved a new sense of realism in their works. The artist, one of the foremost painters of the International Gothic style in northwest Germany, still adhered to the traditional gilded background, although the inclusion of a horizon and some schematic natural motifs indicate an outdoor setting for both scenes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3623533 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse) (Netherlandish, Maubeuge ca. 1478-1532 Antwerp (?)). Dimensions: 18 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (47 x 34.9 cm). Date: ca. 1520-25.This is the only independent portrait by Gossart that is signed; the scroll reads, "Joannes Malbodius pingebat." The sitter is turned to the left in a three-quarter view against a dark background, a format that derives from the earlier portraiture tradition of Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. Like his predecessors, Gossart paid careful attention to tiny details such as the stubble of the beard and the individually painted hairs of the eyebrows, but he emphasized the sculptural form of the sitter in a new and bold way. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Jan Gossart (called Mabuse).

alb3651723 Saint Paul. Artist: Circle of Jan van Eyck (Netherlandish, Maaseyck (?) 1390-Brussels 1441). Culture: Netherlandish. Dimensions: 5 3/4 x 3 1/8 in. (14.6 x 7.9 cm). Date: ca. 1430.Once attributed to Petrus Christus (1410-1472/73), this drawing on vellum has since been reassigned to an artist in the Circle of Jan van Eyck. It is one of two extant drawings in a series of the twelve Apostles. The vellum is so transparent that it is conceivable that the straight pen lines defining the contours and folds of the drapery were traced from a model and the hatching filled in afterward with point of brush. It is likely that the Lehman drawing and its prototype related to a painting, possibly a grisaille painting, rather than to sculpture. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3651040 The Crucifixion; The Last Judgment. Artist: Jan van Eyck (Netherlandish, Maaseik ca. 1390-1441 Bruges) and Workshop Assistant. Dimensions: Each 22 1/4 x 7 2/3 in. (56.5 x 19.7 cm). Date: ca. 1440-41.Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, considered Van Eyck (his court painter) unequalled in his "art and science." In fact, Van Eyck's expansive yet microcosmic paintings seem observed through both a microscope and a telescope. In The Crucifixion, he evokes a remarkable range of emotions among the crowds, seen against a landscape depicting an imagined Jerusalem; in 1426 he made a trip across the Alps during a diplomatic mission to Italy and the Holy Lands. He gives an equally palpable form to the horrors of the Last Judgment. The frames are original, with damaged inscriptions in Latin and Middle Dutch. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3615197 Head of Christ. Artist: Petrus Christus (Netherlandish, Baarle-Hertog (Baerle-Duc), active by 1444-died 1475/76 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 5 7/8 x 4 1/4 in. (14.9 x 10.8 cm); parchment 5 3/4 x 4 1/8 in. (14.6 x 10.5 cm). Date: ca. 1445.This intimate image of Christ's head, intended for private devotion, derives from a lost picture of the Holy Face by Jan van Eyck, now known only through copies. Following the Eyckian composition, Petrus Christus treated the head like a portrait by surrounding it with a fictive frame, thereby underscoring the physical immediacy of Christ. His depiction differs from the prototype, however, in presenting Christ with furrowed brow, the crown of thorns, and drops of blood running down his forehead and onto his chest. These details stimulated a more compassionate reflection on the crucified Christ's suffering by engaging the empathy of the viewer. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3619466 The Flagellation. Artist: Master of the Berswordt Altar (German, Westphalian, active ca. 1400-35). Dimensions: 22 3/4 x 16 7/8 in. (57.8 x 42.9 cm). Date: ca. 1400.These panels were among thirty scenes of an extensive narrative cycle that formed part of a large altarpiece from the Neustädter Marienkirche in Bielefeld, Westphalia. They were created two decades before panel painting underwent a qualitative revolution in the art of Jan van Eyck, Robert Campin and Rogier van der Weyden, who achieved a new sense of realism in their works. alb3643388 Virgin and Child with Four Angels. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: 24 7/8 x 15 3/8 in. (63.2 x 39.1 cm). Date: ca. 1510-15.Gerard David, the leading painter in Bruges in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, followed the legacy of Jan van Eyck. In this painting he has taken the Virgin and Child from his predecessor's well-known Virgin and Child at the Fountain, but modernized the composition by placing the figures in a grand arched porch flanked by columns with Italianate capitals and against the backdrop of contemporary Bruges. A Carthusian monk is seen strolling and reading in the enclosed garden, suggesting that the painting was linked to the former monastery at Genadedael, just outside the city walls of Bruges. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3663850 The Belles Heures of Jean de France, duc de Berry. Artist: The Limbourg Brothers (Franco-Netherlandish, active France, by 1399-1416). Culture: French. Dimensions: Single leaf, Overall: 9 3/8 x 6 11/16 in. (23.8 x 17 cm); Double leaf, Overall: 9 3/8 x 13 7/16 in. (23.8 x 34.1 cm). Date: 1405-1408/1409.Created between 1405 and 1408 or 1409, probably in Paris, the Belles Heures, or Beautiful Hours, a private devotional book, is one of the most sumptuous manuscripts to have come down to us from the Middle Ages. Commissioned by Jean de France, duc de Berry from the Limbourg brothers, the most gifted artists of their time, it is the only manuscript completed by them in its entirety. The richly illustrated text is enhanced by seven unprecedented picture cycles devoted to Christian figures or events that held special significance for the duke. Using a luminous palette, the artists blended an intimate Northern vision of nature with Italianate modes of figural articulation. The keen interest in the natural world and the naturalistic means of representing it, so striking in the 172 illuminations, foreshadow the work of Jan van Eyck and the ensuing generations of outstanding 15th-century painters in the South Netherlands. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: The Limbourg Brothers.

(58.4 x 30.8 cm), Paintings, Netherlandish Painter (ca. 1500), Like David’s Virgin and Child with Four Angels (displayed nearby), this picture reflects the popularity of Van Eyck’s Virgin and Child at the Fountain.
