akg7729684 Italy, Apulia, city of Barletta: head of bronze statue "Colossus of Barletta" at north front of Basilica del Santa Sepolcro (Basilica of the Holy Grave of Jesus); according to legends, the bronze statue was found in the harbour of Barletta, shortly after 1204, when crusaders hat looted Constantinople during the 4th Crusade. A Venician ship turned back but shipwrecked and lost the statue in the harbour of Barletta. Most credited scientific explanation is, that the statue had been in Ravenna and was transported from there to Barletta according to a report of 1279 of the minorite monk Tommaso da Pavia. Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen had ordered excavations in Ravenna, in 1231 and 1232. There the colossus was found and brought to Apulia. The 5,11 m high bronze statue, in 1309 lost some legs and arms, as Dominicans made bells of these. In 1491, the colossus was reconstructed and the missing parts re-added. The statue of most probably 5th century AD shows a late East Roman Emperor, most probably Emperor Teodosius II (reign 408 - 450 AD), and was installed, most probably, by Emperor Valentinian III, in 439, in Ravenna. Earlier, it was thought, that it showed Emperor Heraclius (reign 610 - 641 AD). Locals called the statue therefore "Eraclio". Other theories favor Valentinian I (reign 364 - 375), Arcadius (reign 395 - 408), Honorius (reign 393 - 423), Marcian (reign 450 - 457), Justinian I (reign 527 - 565) or even Emperor Leo I the Thracian (reign 457 - 474). The Basilica del Santa Sepolcro (Basilica of the Holy Grave) dates back to 1130 and was even mentioned in 1182, by the Pope. It was erected at an important crossway of the pilgrim way Via Francigena and the way from Canosa (also Via Traiana) and run a huge hospital for pilgrims who left Barletta to travel to the Holy Land and Jerusalem.

After completing an apprenticeship as a photographer, he opened his own studio in Dresden at the age of only 22. Soon Erfurth orientated himself towards the up-and-coming pictorialist photography, participated in numerous amateur photographic exhibitions from 1894 onwards and managed to make a name for himself both as an artistically ennobled amateur and successful professional photographer. Portraits are central to his work, which he began taking in 1906 in his new studio, a classicist palace, in a stylishly elegant ambience, appealing to the wealthy bourgeoisie. He also produced numerous portraits of famous personalities, including Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Dix and Joachim Ringelnatz. While his studies around 1905 still show full-length figures depicted in an atmospheric way, from the 1920s onward the focus is on the face, which is photographed against a simple monochrome background. Here, his pictorial approach corresponds to the portrait of classical modernism, whereby the technique of oil printing emphasizes the softness and materiality of the pigments and at the same time places the portraits in the art-photographic tradition. Erfurth is a co-founder of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner (1919), teaches at the Leipzig Academy and moves from Dresden to Cologne in the 1930s, where he builds up an art collection. After his Cologne studio and archive were destroyed in the Second World War, Erfurth rescued himself in Gaienhofen on Lake Constance. (Ca.

akg7771017 World War II Aircraft. The Ju 88 was the most versatile aircraft in the Luftwaffe's armoury, serving as a level and dive-bomber, torpedo-bomber, heavy day- and night-fighter and eventually even as a flying bomb. Over 15,000 of all variants including prototypes were built, and the type served from the first day of the Second World War to the last. The principal bomber variants in 1940 were the A-1 and A-5, the A-4 which entered service in October 1940 becoming the most-produced of all. The A-4 had remedied most of the shortcomings of the earlier models, not least in having an increased wing span and stronger construction to withstand the stresses of the dive-bombing role, and defensive armament was five flexible 7.92 mm machine guns - an improvement, but still not enough to adequately defend it against RAF fighters. Maximum bomb-load was 3,000 kg (6.620 lb) but normal bomb-load was 1,500-2,000 kg (3,310-4,410 lb). Two Jumo 211 J-1 or J-2 engines gave it a top speed of 290 mph and its operational range was 1,100 miles. 4D+CH served with KG30. On 24th July 1941, it made a forced landing at Yaverland, near Sandown on the Isle of Wight. The crew, led by Lt. W Deiderich, were returning from a raid over Birkenhead and had lost their way due to successful jamming of the returning homing beacons by the RAF. They then circled for several hours before putting down in Yaverland, having thought the Solent was the English Channel. On landing and realising their mistake, the crew set the onboard charges and evacuated the aircraft. As they made their way from the aircraft, they instructed locals in English not to go near. Minutes later it exploded and the fire then engulfed the aircraft. Illustration (Tim Brown), 2019.
