948_05_01256321 Tizian is the greatest son of Venice, a painter prince, how few its equal and perhaps the greatest portrait painters of all time. He has set the imperishable and noblest monuments with his self-portraits. He died in 1576 at the age of 99 years of the plague. This image represents him at the age of 94 years.

948_05_01256320 About 20 years later, was erected by order of the Austrian emperor, a marble monument to Titian against the Canovadenkmal in the Chiesa dei Frari, because it is believed that Titian's earthly remains are buried there. You can tell immediately that this is a work of art of a different kind. In the middle is a picture of Titian and about reproductions of his most famous works is.

alb3601378 Venus and Adonis. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 42 x 52 1/2 in. (106.7 x 133.4 cm). Date: 1560s.Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing--correctly--that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus from the back, enhances the viewer's sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid. Titian's workshop made multiple versions of this composition, but this one is of exceptional quality and was painted by Titian himself. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio).

alb3653231 Madonna and Child. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: Overall 18 x 22 in. (45.7 x 55.9 cm); painted surface 17 x 21 1/2 in. (43.2 x 54.6 cm). Date: ca. 1508.This is among the earliest devotional paintings of the Madonna and Child by Titian, dating to about 1508. Technical study has revealed that the artist first posed the figures sitting erect and in the center of the canvas, a composition closer to those by Giovanni Bellini. The final pose is more informal and suggests a tender rapport between the mother and child. The picture has been strongly cleaned in the past and has lost much of its delicacy of definition. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3610866 Venus and the Lute Player. Artist: Titian (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice) and Workshop. Dimensions: 65 x 82 1/2 in. (165.1 x 209.6 cm). Date: ca. 1565-70.Titian and his workshop painted the theme of Venus and a musician in multiple versions during the latter part of his career. Venus's contours would be transferred to a new canvas and laid in by the workshop, varying the composition. In this majestic example, Titian fully painted the landscape as well as attended to the flesh tones of Venus, but other parts, such as the viol, remained unfinished. These paintings celebrate the coming together of love and music, but they may also allude to contemporary debates concerning "seeing" versus "hearing" as the primary means for perceiving beauty. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Titian (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90? -1576 Venice) and Workshop.

alb3619161 Portrait of a Man. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 19 3/4 x 17 3/4 in. (50.2 x 45.1 cm). Date: ca. 1515.Formerly ascribed to Giorgione, this lyrical painting is now generally regarded as an early work by Titian of about 1515. The surface is seriously abraded, and the canvas has been cut down. It is likely that the right arm originally rested on a parapet and that the whole of the gloved right hand was shown. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3646946 Filippo Archinto (born about 1500, died 1558), Archbishop of Milan. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: 46 1/2 x 37 in. (118.1 x 94 cm). Date: mid-1550s.The Milanese Filippo Archinto was a remarkable Catholic cleric who attended the Council of Trent and zealously fought against heresy. Titian painted him when Archinto served as papal nuncio in Venice. Soon afterwards, he was confirmed as Archbishop of Milan, but intrigue worthy of the theater kept him from taking up his role and he died in exile. Titian's portrayal of him is subtle, capturing the power of the sitter's personality and intelligence, and suggesting the textures of his white gown and deep red mozzetto, or cape, with lively brushstrokes. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
