alb3675686 Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa oki nami ura), also known as The Great Wave, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei). Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760-1849 Tokyo (Edo)). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 10 1/8 x 14 15/16 in. (25.7 x 37.9 cm). Date: ca. 1830-32.The breathtaking composition of this woodblock print, said to have inspired Debussy's La Mer (The Sea) and Rilke's Der Berg (The Mountain), ensures its reputation as an icon of world art. Hokusai cleverly played with perspective to make Japan's grandest mountain appear as a small triangular mound within the hollow of the cresting wave. The artist became famous for his landscapes created using a palette of indigo and imported Prussian blue. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

When it was shown at the Hispanic Society of America in New York in 1909, the New York Times praised the "water of many hues, lashing and foaming against the iridescent surface of wet rocks" and called Sorolla a great modern master. alb9410155 Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, 17th century, Kano Tan'y, Japanese, 1602 - 1674, 1 7/8 × 10 1/2 × 9 7/8 in. (4.76 × 26.67 × 25.08 cm)7 × 6 3/4 in. (17.78 × 17.15 cm) (sheet), Ink on silk; ink, gold, and mica on paper, Japan, 17th century, The Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers was a popular theme in East Asian painting and poetry. It celebrated the beauty of a region in southeast China where the two rivers converge. This album consists of eight paintings by Kano Tany, a central figure of the Edo-period Kano house. When he was only fifteen years old he was named goy eshi, or painter-in-attendance, to the Tokugawa shoguns (military commanders) in the capital city of Edo. In order to produce a wide variety of paintings for the shogun, Tany had to be fluent in an array of Chinese and Japanese styles. The eight paintings in this album are in the 'splashed-ink' style of the Chinese painter Yujian (active late 1200s), who was beloved in Japan. Sometime after Tany completed these paintings, they were inserted into this album and paired with poems brushed on elegant paper decorated with various kinds of gold.

akg1558460 Jacob JORDAENS:. This painting prabably dates from around 1620, and one other signed version is known to exist. The work exemplifies the vein of robust realism that Jordaens, in the wake of Rubens and Van Dyck, brought to the interpretation of religious subject matter. The theme is derived from the 'Meditations' of the so-called Pseudo-Bonaventura, a popular early renaissance text which recounts the visit of the infant John the Baptist with his parents, Saints Elizabeth and Zacharias, to the Virgin and Child. Accompanied by a lamb, Saint John releases a goldfinch. This bird was believed to have been splashed with the blood of Christ at the Crucifixion, so was seen as a symbol of the Passion. Visually, the high basket chair suggests a halo encircling the heads of the Virgin and Child, thus contributing a symbolic resonance to a painting which is otherwise filled with a vigorous sense of reality. Oil on canvas, 114 × 153 cm, about 1620. London, National Gallery. Museum: London, National Gallery. Copyright: Additional permissions needed for non-editorial use.
