902_05_12516057highres Magic lantern slide circa 1900.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History.No. I6?The Bazaar.?The Bazaar is an institution of Eastern life. It is a place where much time and money may he spent in purchasing Oriental wares. This picture gives us a good idea of a bazaar for the sale of brass wares of Kabylo workmanship, Tunisian embroideries, skins of wild animals, bournouses, native money, and a variety of other Eastern products. The owner, an Algerian Jew, is sitting at the entrance ready to oblige his customers in every possible way. There are other bazaars in Algiers equally interesting to Europeans. They sell, some more especially, magnificent gold, silver, and silk embroideries, handsome Oriental costumes; others, again, devote their energies to the sale of delicate and expensive arabesque inlaid work, Oriental antique arms, essences, fezzes, &c.?in fact, such a variety of novelties as irresistibly attract the visitor [B], and end by leaving him considerably lighter in pocket before ho has left the town.
