akg4199843 This is one of a celebrated series of small woodcuts that Holbein designed on the theme of Death. In the words of Christian Rümelin: 'Death is depicted in several guises in these illustrations, ranging from the murderous agent (of the monk, merchant, chandler, rich man, knight, earl and nobleman) to the warning commentator (of the pope, emperor, cardinal, judge, alderman, lawyer, and preacher)'. Members of society are mostly portrayed in a situation designed to criticise a specific type of behaviour 'such as the corruption of the judge, the vanity of the canon, the acquisitiveness of the rich man and the merchant'. The series adapts the tradition of the medieval Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) as the basis for a new and original sequence. It also relates to the imagery of French illuminated Books of Hours and poetical traditions. 'The scenes are the customary illustrations in which Death appears in the form of a skeleton'.

(52.4 x 38.1 cm); painted surface 20 3/8 x 14 5/8 in. (51.4 x 37.1 cm). Date: 1517.In 1517 Holbein decorated the house of the Lucerne magistrate Jacob von Hertenstein. Concurrently, he made this portrait of the magistrate's eldest son, Benedikt, who engages the viewer both with his direct glance and the inscription, which reads as if he is speaking: "When I looked like this I was twenty-two years old." Directly following these words is the declaration that "H.H." painted the work. The artist's use of paper mounted on wood is unusual but not unique. He initiated the portrait as a drawing on paper and then continued working up in oil colors to its completion. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: 1536.This painting belongs to a group of portraits Hans Holbein made for the German merchants of the Hanseatic League in London (see also his Portrait of a Member of the Wedigh Family nearby). The bearded, thirty-year-old sitter is identified by the letter in his hand, which is addressed "To the honorable and pious Derick Berck, London, at the Steelyard [.]." The other inscription on the cartellino refers to a passage from Virgil's Aeneid that reads, "[Perchance even this distress] will someday be a joy to recall." Exhorting perseverance, this statement might have been the sitter's personal motto. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3655423 Hermann von Wedigh III (died 1560). Artist: Hans Holbein the Younger (German, Augsburg 1497/98-1543 London). Dimensions: 16 5/8 x 12 3/4 in. (42.2 x 32.4 cm), with added strip of 1/2 in. (1.3 cm) at bottom. Date: 1532.During his second sojourn in England (1532-43) Holbein made portraits for a new clientele, the German merchants of the Hanseatic League, whose guildhall was located in the London Steelyard. The sitter, whose ring displays the arms of the Wedighs of Cologne, is probably Hermann von Wedigh III, portrayed at age twenty-nine. The Latin quotation on the sheet of paper in the foreground, reading "Truth breeds hatred," comes from the Roman comedy Andria by Terence, popular among Humanists. The inserted slip of paper could thus refer to the book's content and perhaps have served as the sitter's personal motto. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3641287 Portrait of a Man (Sir Ralph Sadler?). Artist: Workshop of Hans Holbein the Younger (German, Augsburg 1497/98-1543 London). Dimensions: Diameter 12 in. (30.5 cm). Date: 1535.During his second sojourn in London (1532-43), Holbein catered primarily to Henry VIII's requests, but he also worked for many courtiers who were eager to have their portraits made by the king's painter. He began such commissions by capturing the likeness of the sitter on paper. This portrait of an unidentified twenty-eight-year-old man can be directly linked to a preparatory study (Royal Collection, Windsor Castle). The masterfully executed drawing was used for transfer, since its incised lines match the contours of the portrait precisely. Holbein left the painting's execution to a workshop assistant. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Workshop of Hans Holbein the Younger.

alb3666499 Lady Lee (Margaret Wyatt, born about 1509). Artist: Workshop of Hans Holbein the Younger (German, Augsburg 1497/98-1543 London). Dimensions: 17 3/8 × 13 3/8 in. (44.1 × 34 cm). Date: early 1540s.Lady Lee, born Margaret Wyatt, grew up in a family closely connected to the court of Henry VIII. Her father, Henry Wyatt, served as treasurer of the king's chamber, and her brother, Thomas, was the foremost Tudor poet and an ambassador. She is shown here at the age of thirty-four, sumptuously dressed in the courtly fashion of the early 1540s. The painting is close to the manner of Holbein, but the attention paid to decorative effects and linear details at the expense of life-like portrayal of the sitter is indicative of workshop production. The portrait was likely based on a Holbein drawing. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
