alb3631117 Pair of candlesticks (flambeaux or chandeliers). Culture: French, Paris. Designer: After designs by Juste Aurèle Meissonnier (French, Turin 1695-1750 Paris). Dimensions: .1 confirmed, diameter of base: 12 1/8 × 7 3/8 × 7 3/8 in., 93.466oz. (30.8 × 18.7 × 18.7 cm, 2650g).2 confirmed, diameter of base: 12 1/8 × 7 3/8 × 7 3/8 in., 112.864oz. (30.8 × 18.7 × 18.7 cm, 3200g). Date: 1735-50.In the era before gas lighting and electricity, candles played a principal role in illuminating the interior of a house. The number of candles lit was an indication of the status of the owner; beeswax candles, preferred over tallow because they burned cleaner and had a more pleasant smell, were enormously expensive. No wonder, then, that visitors commented on the quantity of light at certain events--as Philip Thicknesse did in his Useful Hints to Those Who Make the Tour of France (1768). The table at a dinner he attended in 1767 "was illuminated with upwards of sixty wax lights."[1]The exuberantly asymmetrical model for this candlestick was the work of Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, one of the leading Rococo designers. Active also as architect, painter, and silversmith to Louis XV, Meissonnier rendered three drawings in order to show from all sides this candlestick with its loosely spiraling stem. The drawings were engraved by Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772) and published in Dousième Livre des oeuvres de J. A. Messonnier: Livre de chandeliers de sculpture en argent (1734-35).[2] The design, incorporating shells, floral sprays, and even a butterfly in a whirlwind of motion, became very popular and was executed in both silver and gilt bronze. The quality of the chasing and gilding of this pair with its burnished and matte areas is outstanding.[Daniëlle Kisluk-Grosheide, 2010]Footnotes:[1] Thicknesse 1768, p. 41.[2] Fuhring 1999, vol. 2, pp. 350-52, nos. 76-78, ill. alb3654447 Portrait medal of Giovanni Giovano Pontano. Artist: Adriano Fiorentino (Adriano di Giovanni de' Maestri) (Italian, Florence (?) born ca. 1450-60, died 1499 Florence). Dimensions: Diam. 8.4 cm, wt. 219.38 g.. Date: model last quarter 15th century (cast 16th century).Giovanni Gioviano Pontano was a humanist and prolific writer in Latin. He was also an educator at the royal house of Aragon in Naples, where he served as tutor to Ferdinand II and secretary to his mother, Ippolita Sforza. Pontano later turned against his Aragonese patrons in writings endorsing their enemy, Louis XII of France. The medal's reverse shows the personifcation of Urania holding a lyre and a starry globe, an allusion to a poem by Pontano. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3663362 Portrait medal of Paolo Giovio (obverse); Giovio Raising a Man from a Grave (reverse). Artist: Francesco da Sangallo (Italian, 1494-1576). Dimensions: Diam. 9.5 cm, wt. 308.61 g.. Date: model ca. 1552 (probably a later cast). The medals' obverse portrays the writer, historian, and collector Paolo Giovio, known for the group of portraits of famous men that he assembled in his villa near Lake Como as well as his writing on contemporary history, including the lives of illustrious men. The reverse of Paolo Giovio's medal shows him holding a large book under his left shoulder, while he helps a nude man rise from the grave--an allusion to the ability of an historian to bring the past back to life. It may also be an echo of Christ's raising of Lazarus. The scene is reinforced by the inscription: Nunc Denique Vives, or "Now at last you will live."Francesco da Sangallo also executed Giovio's marble funerary monument in 1560, which was erected in the cloister of San Lorenzo in Florence in 1574. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3634502 Openwork furniture plaque with lion. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 3.03 x 2.44 x 0.43 in. (7.7 x 6.2 x 1.09 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a snarling lion with hindquarters raised, head turned back over his shoulder, framed on three sides with a simple border decorated by two parallel vertical lines. The lion is carved in the openwork technique, in which the background is cut away and remaining elements are carved in the round. The eye was drilled for the insertion of an inlay, now missing. The piece is heavily damaged and parts of the frame and the lion's lower legs have been restored in wax. A tenon projects from the top edge of the frame and would have been inserted into a slot in a separate frame, probably as part of a piece of furniture. Two drill holes in the tenon indicate that once inserted, the plaque was locked in place by driving pegs through the holes to fix it to the frame. Carved ivory pieces such as this were widely used in the production of elite furniture and luxury objects during the early first millennium B.C., and could be overlaid with gold foil or inlaid to create a dazzling effect of gleaming surfaces and bright colors.Built by the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II, the palaces and storerooms of Nimrud housed thousands of pieces of carved ivory. Most of the ivories served as furniture inlays or small precious objects such as boxes. While some of them were carved in the same style as the large Assyrian reliefs lining the walls of the Northwest Palace, the majority of the ivories display images and styles related to the arts of North Syria and the Phoenician city-states. Phoenician style ivories are distinguished by their use of imagery related to Egyptian art, such as sphinxes and figures wearing pharaonic crowns, and the use of elaborate carving techniques such as openwork and colored glass inlay. North Syrian style ivories tend to depict stockier figures in more dynamic compositions, carved as solid plaques with fewer added decorative elements. However, some pieces do not fit easily into any of these three styles. Most of the ivories were probably collected by the Assyrian kings as tribute from vassal states, and as booty from conquered enemies, while some may have been manufactured in workshops at Nimrud. The ivory tusks that provided the raw material for these objects were almost certainly from African elephants, imported from lands south of Egypt, although elephants did inhabit several river valleys in Syria until they were hunted to extinction by the end of the eighth century B.C. alb3599761 Saint Barbara. Culture: German. Dimensions: 50 1/4 × 17 × 13 1/4 in., 63 lb. (127.6 × 43.2 × 33.7 cm, 28576.613g). Date: ca. 1490.This well-preserved figure of Saint Barbara came from the central shrine of the high altarpiece of the church of Saint Mauritius on the east side of the Rhine River, south of Strasbourg. The central shrine was dismantled prior to the early seventeenth century, and the sculptures were consigned to the charnel house in Kippenheim. The now-dispersed figures and the painted wings have survived, allowing for the reconstruction of the altarpiece. Dedicated to the Virgin, the central and larger group of the Virgin and Child occupied a niche of extended height and was flanked by Saints Mauritius and Catherine on the left and Saints Barbara and Gregory the Great on the right. The outer wings represented the Annunciation and the Visitation, and the inner wings showed the Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds. This sculpture retains much of its original paint and appliqué decoration; the red dress is enhanced with molded and gilt-wax brocade patterning, and the fine decoration on the mantle was achieved by etching through a transparent indigo layer over silver.
