The host is in the middle of the room and welcomes four strangers to his house. The standing man on the left and the seated man are pilgrims. Because pilgrims, recognizable by the walking staff and the pilgrim bottle hanging on their backs, are always on their way, they clearly symbolize the hospitality shown here. The other guests, two women, warm up by the fire, they sit on three, small, three-legged stools. In the background is a made-up four-poster bed, with open curtains. The headboard is carved in gothic letter panels.
