The fact that she is born in an epoque of change makes the life of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, who is a famous poetess and composer, a conflict between the requirement of representing an old Westphalian noble family and her inner vocation of being a poetess. Her poems originate between the conflicting priorities of a romantic spirit at a period of social optimism which pervades for instance fundamental political changes in the early 19th century. She grew up in a quite and very familial environment in the region of Münster and was constantly in contact with important contemporary composers and poets, so that her early works originated in a rather private sphere. In order to keep up her friendships she travelled a lot to the area of Cologne or Bonn. It was only after 1841, when she mainly lived in her sister's and brother-in-law's house at the Lake of Constance, that her most productive period began. This made her earn public appreciation for her poems, which peaked in the fact that even today she is considered the most important representative of German poetry from the late romantic era. The present work that depicts the so-called Thurn'sche Gütchen (Thurn manor) at the northern Lake of Constance also stems from the time she spent at her sister's and brother-in-law's house. Her brother-in-law, the librarian Joseph von Laßberg, owned the Castle Eppishausen in the canton Thurgau and Annette von Droste-Hülshoff stayed there for a long period of time. From there she also made friends with the Count of Thurn's daughter, Emma. The filigree paper work which depicts the Thurn manor is very precise in its technical details. The small paper cut has always remained and been passed on in the poetess's family as it is confirmed by the inscription verso. Due to the fact that the estate Droste-Hülshoffs can mainly be found in the university and regional library of Münster, the present work is a special rarity. A similar work has been shown in 1997 in the City Museum of Münster. Furthermore, the paper cut by the hand of the early romantic Philipp Otto Runge, whose work has already been sold successfully at a VAN HAM auction in 2011, offers a very good comparative example.
