alb3682206 Portrait medal of Sultan Mehmed II (obverse); a Triumphal Chariot (reverse). Artist: Bertoldo di Giovanni (Italian, born Florence (?) ca. 1430-40, died 1491 Poggio a Caiano). Dimensions: Diam. 9.4 cm, wt. 321.66 g.. Date: model 1480 (old aftercast).Bertoldo based this likeness on a medal by the Venetian artist Gentile Bellini, who had also painted the Ottoman sultan's portrait. Mehmed favored Italian medalists, perceiving their art form as a way to emphasize his rightful lineage among the emperors of Byzantium and ancient Rome. This medal, Bertoldo's largest and only signed example, was a gift from Lorenzo de' Medici in flattering recognition of the sultan's military victories. On the reverse, a triumphant horse-drawn chariot is led by Mars, the god of war, carrying a trophy, an allusion to Mehmed's planned territorial conquests. Standing on a pedestal, the sultan grasps a rope tied to three crowned female figures, representing his abduction of the territories under his rule: Asia, Greece, and Trebizond (an empire occupying the southern coast of the Black Sea). Mehmed associated himself not with the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire but with the entire line of emperors from ancient Rome and Byzantium. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3634825 Saint Justina of Padua. Artist: Bartolomeo Montagna (Bartolomeo Cincani) (Italian, Vicentine, before 1459-1523). Dimensions: Overall, with added strips, 19 1/2 x 15 1/8 in. (49.5 x 38.4 cm); painted surface 19 1/8 x 14 3/4 in. (48.6 x 37.5 cm). Date: 1490s.A fragment from an altarpiece, this picture shows the early Christian martyr Justina in the guise of an elegantly dressed contemporary of the artist, thereby overlapping an ideal image of a saint with the conventions of portraiture. This is not surprising, for by the 1490s it was not uncommon to have yourself depicted as your patron saint. The palm branch and the sword piercing her breast are the saint's traditional attributes. In 1469 Montagna was associated with Giovanni Bellini; he went on to become the principal painter in Vicenza. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3621672 Three Saints: Roch, Anthony Abbot, and Lucy. Artist: Cima da Conegliano (Giovanni Battista Cima) (Italian, Conegliano ca. 1459-1517/18 Venice or Conegliano). Dimensions: 50 1/2 x 48 in. (128.3 x 121.9 cm). Date: ca. 1513.Given the elevated position of Saint Anthony Abbot (ca. 251-356), flanked by Saints Roch (protector of victims of the plague) and Lucy (patron of the blind: she holds an oil lamp), this altarpiece may have been painted about 1513 for the brothers of Saint Anthony, who ministered to plague victims. As a work of Bellini it belonged to Empress Josephine Bonaparte, testifying to the enduring reputation of Cima's probable teacher. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3602586 The Circumcision. Artist: Workshop of Giovanni Bellini (Italian, Venice, active by 1459-died 1516 Venice). Dimensions: 26 3/4 x 40 1/2 in. (67.9 x 102.9 cm). Date: 1511.The picture was produced in Bellini's workshop and follows a cartoon by the master. In the most distinguished example of the composition, in the National Gallery, London, the figures are shown with slight variations against a dark, neutral background instead of a landscape. The present picture has been attributed to Vincenzo Catena, but the resemblances to his work are superficial. The picture has been badly overcleaned. In consequence, the forms look schematic. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3602671 Madonna and Child. Artist: Giovanni Bellini (Italian, Venice, active by 1459-died 1516 Venice). Dimensions: 35 x 28 in. (88.9 x 71.1 cm). Date: late 1480s.Separated from our everyday world by a parapet, the figures nonetheless engage the viewer with their gazes. A cloth of honor has been pulled aside to reveal a distant landscape, where we witness the transition from dormant to verdant nature--a metaphor, like the dawn sky, for death and rebirth. The asymmetrical composition looks ahead to the work of Titian. When Albrecht Dürer visited Venice, he declared Bellini the best painter. The fine Venetian frame is of the period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3653231 Madonna and Child. Artist: Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Italian, Pieve di Cadore ca. 1485/90?-1576 Venice). Dimensions: Overall 18 x 22 in. (45.7 x 55.9 cm); painted surface 17 x 21 1/2 in. (43.2 x 54.6 cm). Date: ca. 1508.This is among the earliest devotional paintings of the Madonna and Child by Titian, dating to about 1508. Technical study has revealed that the artist first posed the figures sitting erect and in the center of the canvas, a composition closer to those by Giovanni Bellini. The final pose is more informal and suggests a tender rapport between the mother and child. The picture has been strongly cleaned in the past and has lost much of its delicacy of definition. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3662831 The Adoration of the Shepherds. Artist: Catena (Vincenzo di Biagio) (Italian, Venetian, active by 1506-died 1531). Dimensions: 49 1/2 x 81 3/4 in. (125.7 x 207.6 cm). Date: probably after 1520.Catena's painting relies for inspiration on the artists with whom he was in contact, above all his friend the great Venetian painter Giorgione, but with allusions as well to prints by Albrecht Dürer and landscape details by Giovanni Bellini. Painted around 1520 the Adoration has great charm, but must have already seemed old-fashioned in its approach to composition at that date. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3610147 Virgin and Child with Saint Anne. Artist: Albrecht Dürer (German, Nuremberg 1471-1528 Nuremberg). Dimensions: 23 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. (60 x 49.8 cm). Date: probably 1519.This haunting devotional painting depicts Saint Anne, who was particularly venerated in Germany, with the Virgin and Child. The motif of the sleeping infant, foreshadowing Christ's death, was probably inspired by Giovanni Bellini, whose work Dürer admired during his sojourn in Venice. Anne's hand on her daughter's shoulder takes on a consolatory meaning, and her distant gaze suggests a premonition of Christ's Passion. The model for Anne was Dürer's wife, Agnes, studied in a preparatory drawing signed and dated 1519 (Albertina, Vienna). Although this panel's date and monogram were added later, the picture was likely painted in that year. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
