alb3632514 General Étienne-Maurice Gérard (1773-1852). Artist: Jacques Louis David (French, Paris 1748-1825 Brussels). Dimensions: 77 5/8 x 53 5/8 in. (197.2 x 136.2 cm). Date: 1816.Following Napoleon's defeat at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, Jacques Louis David, a leading figure in the French revolution and first painter to the Emperor, went into exile in Brussels. There he painted General Gérard, a commander in the French army and a member of the imperial aristocracy who had also settled temporarily in the Belgian capital. This portrait is among the first David painted abroad and it is remarkable for its clear, bright color and sharp realism. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3678141 The Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: 20 x 17 in. (50.8 x 43.2 cm). Date: ca. 1512-15.This composition presents the Flight into Egypt as a continuous narrative. In a tiny background scene the Holy Family emerges from the forest, en route to the contemporary Netherlandish town at the left. In the foreground Mary nurses the Child in a moment of repose on their arduous journey, which the viewer is visually meant to follow. David achieved in this painting a remarkable balance of color and a serene sense of light and atmosphere. His awareness of Italian Renaissance conventions is evident in the pyramidal motif of the Virgin and Child and his use of chiaroscuro to convey the volume of the figures. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3622603 The Crucifixion. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 21 x 15 in. (53.3 x 38.1 cm); painted surface 20 5/8 x 14 3/4 in. (52.5 x 37.5 cm). Date: ca. 1495.In this poignant image, the Crucifixion is presented as an enactment of the written word due to the inclusion of Saint Jerome. The Church Father is shown as somewhat detached from the event at hand, apparently reading about it from his translation of the Bible. True to the account of the Gospels, David has provided an appropriate sense of time and space. The sky is darkened at the moment of Christ's death on Golgotha (literally, "the place of the skull"), and the holy city of Jerusalem with its prominent Church of the Dome of the Rock forms the backdrop. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3626534 The Annunciation. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Angel, overall 31 1/8 x 25 in. (79.1 x 63.5 cm), painted surface 30 1/4 x 24 3/8 in. (76.8 x 61.9 cm); Virgin, overall 31 1/8 x 25 1/4 in. (79.1 x 64.1 cm), painted surface 30 1/2 x 24 3/4 in. (77.5 x61.9 cm). Date: 1506.These panels were part of a spectacular multi-storied polyptych commissioned by Vincenzo Sauli, a wealthy Italian banker and diplomat with connections to Bruges, for the high altar of the Benedictine abbey church of San Gerolamo della Cervara, near Genoa. Taking the placement of the Annunciation within the altarpiece into account, David has altered the perspective and the scale of the figures, since both panels were meant to be viewed from below. In style, the ensemble reveals a synthesis of northern and Italian artistic modes that perhaps reflect the patron's ties to both regions. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3627944 Daphnis Running toward Chloe. Artist: baron François Gérard (French, Rome 1770-1837 Paris). Dimensions: Sheet: 10 13/16 x 8 15/16 in. (27.5 x 22.7 cm). Date: ca. 1798.In 1798 Gérard contributed six illustrations to the 1800 reprint of Longus's Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et de Chloé (1559). This composition, which was not ultimately engraved in the publication, is a première pensée for the climax of the novel when the two lovers finally reunite. On the sheet, Daphnis emerges from the lower left corner and reaches for Chloe. Bold black chalk outlines delineate the figures from the chaotic background. Gérard's animated blending of wash and white gouache gives the impression of a billowing dress that both covers and reveals Chloe's lissome figure. This emphasis on the figure, much akin to that of antique sculpted drapery, reflects Gérard's earlier education in the studio of Jacques Louis David (French, 1748-1825). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3603901 Archangel Gabriel; The Virgin Annunciate. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Left wing: 34 1/2 x 11 5/8 in. (87.7 x 29.5 cm), painted surface 34 x 11 in. (86.4 x 27.9 cm); right wing: 34 1/2 x 11 3/4 in. (87.6 x 30 cm), painted surface 34 x 11 1/8 in. (86.4 x 28.3 cm). Date: ca. 1510.Gerard David painted in Bruges all his life. Where he trained is unknown, though his early works show the influence of his northern Netherlandish roots, and of the art of Hugo van der Goes and Dieric Bouts. These two Annunciation panels, along with the depictions of the Passion that decorated their reverses (1975.1.119), originally formed the movable wings of an altarpiece. When the wings were closed, the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Annunciate were shown. When opened, on certain feast days, the Christ Carrying the Cross and the Resurrection would have been displayed, flanking a central image, perhaps the Lamentation. Characteristic of David's mature style are the deep, translucent colors and the sensitive integration of figures and space in the Passion scenes. The Annunciation is executed in grisaille to emulate sculpture, yet the flesh tones and hair of the figures depart from the monochromatic gray, in keeping with the softer, naturalistic vein prevalent in Bruges painting at the turn of the century. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3604340 The Adoration of the Magi. Artist: Workshop of Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 27 3/4 x 28 7/8 in. (70.5 x 73.3 cm); painted surface 27 1/2 x 28 3/8 in. (69.2 x 72.1 cm). Date: ca. 1520.First established in Bruges, Gerard David also joined the painter's guild in Antwerp in 1515, where his compositions and motifs soon began to circulate. This excellently preserved panel is strongly indebted to David's work. The extravagantly dressed onlookers, however, are a pure invention of Antwerp art, as is the landscape view with travelers carrying goods for trade. Due to Antwerp's status as the mercantile center for northern Europe, scenes of the Adoration of the Magi were particularly popular in the city. They served not only a devotional use, but could also be associated with the travel of foreign goods. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Workshop of Gerard David.

alb3599949 Christ Taking Leave of His Mother. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Arched top, 6 1/8 x 4 3/4 in. (15.6 x 12.1 cm). Date: ca. 1500.David also worked as a manuscript illuminator, a skill reflected in this picture's delicacy of execution. The panel--now in a modern frame--originally formed the right wing of a devotional diptych that would close like a book and thus could easily be used by a traveler during a journey. While its pendant (Bearsted collection, Upton House, Warwickshire) emphasized the loving relationship between the Virgin and Child, this painting depicts the drama of Christ's departure for Jerusalem and his ultimate sacrifice. Mary, accompanied by the weeping Mary Magdalen and Martha, serves as a model of compassion for the viewer. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3619147 The Nativity. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 18 3/4 x 13 1/2 in. (47.6 x 34.3 cm), painted surface 18 1/2 x 13 3/8 in. (47 x 34 cm). Date: early 1480s.This painting, which most likely was intended as a single, private devotional panel, combines the depiction of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Shepherds as described in both biblical and mystical literature. It probably dates from the early 1480s, before David established himself in Bruges. The homely and naive figure types and the geometric simplification of the heads of the Virgin and angels reflect models the artist knew from his early training in the northern Netherlands. Already present is the characteristic combination of serene landscape, simple architectural setting, and meditative figures that would contribute to the painter's popularity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3617612 François Gérard (1770-1837), later Baron Gérard. Artist: baron Antoine Jean Gros (French, Paris 1771-1835 Meudon). Dimensions: 22 1/8 x 18 5/8 in. (56.2 x 47.3 cm). Date: ca. 1790.Both Gros and Gérard were favored students in the rough and tumble fraternity that was the atelier of Jacques Louis David. Intense friendships and rivalries developed there. Gros probably made this sensitive and delicate portrait in Paris before Gérard departed for study in Rome in 1790. Despite the subsequent rift in their friendship, Gérard kept his portrait for the rest of his life, and it remained with his descendants until recently. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3643388 Virgin and Child with Four Angels. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: 24 7/8 x 15 3/8 in. (63.2 x 39.1 cm). Date: ca. 1510-15.Gerard David, the leading painter in Bruges in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, followed the legacy of Jan van Eyck. In this painting he has taken the Virgin and Child from his predecessor's well-known Virgin and Child at the Fountain, but modernized the composition by placing the figures in a grand arched porch flanked by columns with Italianate capitals and against the backdrop of contemporary Bruges. A Carthusian monk is seen strolling and reading in the enclosed garden, suggesting that the painting was linked to the former monastery at Genadedael, just outside the city walls of Bruges. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3664106 The Nativity with Donors and Saints Jerome and Leonard. Artist: Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455-1523 Bruges). Dimensions: Central panel 35 1/2 x 28 in. (90.2 x 71.1 cm); each wing 35 1/2 x 12 3/8 in. (90.2 x 31.4 cm). Date: ca. 1510-15.David focuses attention on the mystery of the Incarnation--that is, Christ's birth and sacrifice for the redemption of mankind. Despite the joyful moment depicted, the figures all wear somber expressions, foreshadowing Christ's eventual suffering and death. The sheaf of grain parallel to the manger refers to John 6:41: "I am the bread which came down from Heaven." The two donors, who are presented by Saints Jerome and Leonard, have remained unidentified. They could have been called Catherine and Anthony, since they are painted with the attributes of saints with these names. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

(14.6 x 10.5 cm), Paintings, Workshop of Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455–1523 Bruges), In the last half of the fifteenth and well into the sixteenth century in the Netherlands, individual pictures of the Virgin and Child were much in demand. Often they were hung on the walls of bedchambers or placed on sideboards to provide inspiration for private moments of prayer.

alb3477217 Christ Blessing, ca. 1500–1505, Oil on wood, Overall, including engaged frame, 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. (12.1 x 8.9 cm); painted surface 3 5/8 x 2 3/8 in. (9.2 x 6 cm), Paintings, Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455–1523 Bruges), This highly spiritual and exquisitely rendered Christ Blessing was adapted from Byzantine icons brought to the Low Countries in the fifteenth century. The panel differs from the Byzantine models in the freshness of observation evident in Christ’s face and in the delicate articulation of the hands, the latter based on Gerard David’s drawings made from life.

(44.8 x 14.6 cm), Paintings, Gerard David (Netherlandish, Oudewater ca. 1455–1523 Bruges), While John the Baptist was frequently represented in Netherlandish art, his pairing with Saint Francis is rare in the North. The latter was venerated especially in southern Europe, suggesting that these paintings could have been commissioned by an Italian merchant in Bruges.

It is one of a group of representations of the head of Christ, called the Holy Face, that have their roots in Byzantine legend and in the legend of Saint Veronica.
