(78.7 x 70.5 cm). Date: 1750.Boucher was an artist of incomparable virtuosity and industry with a preference for mythological and pastoral subjects. Here he shows a beautifully dressed shepherd and shepherdess. The simplicity of the subject belies the complexity of the composition, which is organized around a series of intersecting diagonals. The canvas, much admired at the Salon of 1753, was one of a pair of overdoors from Bellevue, a château belonging to Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Francois Boucher.

This famous work was commissioned for the dressing room at Bellevue, her château near Paris. The bodies of the goddess and her cupids are soft, supple, and blond. The carved and gilded rococo sofa, the silk, velvet, and gold damask drapery, are heavy and elaborate enough for the Victorian era. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Date: 1765.At the Salon of 1765, this painting was exhibited with three others, to form a narrative. A second oval depicted the arrival of the dove carrying a love letter. In one of the two rectangular canvases, the shepherdess read the letter to her confidante, and the other showed the meeting of the lovers.Diderot, a harsh critic of Boucher, praised the four paintings as "a charming little poem," but he condemned the falsity of the genre, comparing it to country life as represented in French opera. Drawings by Beauvarlet after the two ovals, made in preparation for engravings, were exhibited in the Salon of 1769. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Francois Boucher.

alb3647878 The Rebuke of Adam and Eve. Artist: Charles Joseph Natoire (French, Nîmes 1700-1777 Castel Gandolfo). Dimensions: 26 3/4 x 19 3/4 in. (67.9 x 50.2 cm). Date: 1740.Natoire was trained in the studio of François Le Moyne (1688-1737). He won the Prix de Rome and studied in Italy. This picture must have been intended by the younger artist as a tribute to his teacher. It is a pendant to a painting by Le Moyne depicting Adam receiving the forbidden fruit from Eve in the Garden of Eden (private collection). Natoire shared with Le Moyne a predilection for the nude, here depicting with care the rosy and sensual body of the disappointed Eve, a tear glistening on her cheek. alb3663138 Drop-front secretaire (secrètaire à abattant). Culture: French, Paris. Dimensions: 60 x 26 3/4 x 13 3/8 in. (152.4 x 67.9 x 34cm). Maker: René Dubois (1737-1799, master 1755). Date: ca. 1770-75.The form of this secretary, with its pierced pagoda-shaped top, is exceptional in French furniture. Although furniture in the Chinese taste was designed and executed in England during the second half of the eighteenth century, French chinoiserie was almost always limited to the surface decoration. The Oriental scenes in imitation lacquer on the front panels are based on designs for The Four Elements by François Boucher, known from engravings (1740) by Pierre Aveline. The element of fire, apparently the only one for which the original drawing by Boucher exists (now in the Metropolitan), shows a man pouring hot tea into the cup of a seated man who also appears twice on the front of the secretary. Charming tea-drinking scenes formed an important aspect of chinoiserie decoration. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3660268 Virgin and Child with the Young Saint John the Baptist and Angels. Artist: François Boucher (French, Paris 1703-1770 Paris). Dimensions: Oval, 16 1/8 x 13 5/8 in. (41 x 34.6 cm). Date: 1765.Boucher was named director of the French Royal Academy in 1765, the year in which he painted the Virgin and Child. In this sprightly and accomplished picture, which is not overtly religious, he draws attention to the solemn innocence of infancy. Saint John the Baptist is shown as a very young child, his hands clasped in prayer, wearing a sheepskin and accompanied by a lamb. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
