alb3602048 Sir David Brewster. Artist: David Octavius Hill (British, Perth, Scotland 1802-1870 Edinburgh, Scotland); Robert Adamson (British, St. Andrews, Scotland 1821-1848 St. Andrews, Scotland). Dimensions: 20.2 x 15.1 cm (7 15/16 x 5 15/16 in. ). Person in Photograph: Sir David Brewster (British, Jedburgh, Scotland 1781-1868 Melrose). Photography Studio: Hill and Adamson (British, active 1843-1848). Date: ca. 1844.An eminent physicist at St. Andrews University in Scotland, Sir David Brewster was among Talbot's scientific correspondents and one of the first to receive reports and samples of the new art. By 1841 Brewster and his colleague John Adamson, curator of the College Museum and professor of chemistry, were experimenting with the calotype process; the following year, in response to Talbot's hope that someone in Scotland might be persuaded to practice his process as a competitor to professional daguerreotypists, they instructed Adamson's younger brother, Robert, in the techniques of paper photography. Just weeks after the twenty-one-year-old Adamson had established himself as Edinburgh's first professional calotypist in May 1843, Brewster saw an opportunity to send business his way as the locally prominent painter D. O. Hill prepared to paint a large historical canvas commemorating the recent establishment of the Free Church of Scotland. "I got hold of the artist," Brewster wrote to Talbot, "showed him the Calotype, & the eminent advantage he might derive from it in getting likenesses of all the principal characters before they were dispersed to their respective homes. He was at first incredulous, but went to Mr. Adamson, and arranged with him preliminaries for getting all the necessary portraits." Within weeks Hill was completely won over, and the two were working seamlessly in partnership. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3681926 Lady Ruthven. Artist: David Octavius Hill (British, Perth, Scotland 1802-1870 Edinburgh, Scotland); Robert Adamson (British, St. Andrews, Scotland 1821-1848 St. Andrews, Scotland). Dimensions: 19.9 x 15 cm (7 13/16 x 5 7/8 in.). Photography Studio: Hill and Adamson (British, active 1843-1848). Date: ca. 1845.The vast majority of Hill and Adamson photographs show the ministers of the Free Church, notable residents of Edinburgh and distinguished visitors, or the hardy fisherfolk of Newhaven and Saint Andrews. On occasion, particularly in their portraits of the ministers-sober and all dressed alike-Hill and Adamson fell into formulaic patterns based on academic portrait painting. But there is no doubt that they were among the medium's most gifted portraitists, and one need only look at works such as this mysterious portrait of Lady Ruthven-reminiscent of Victorian fashion plates-to understand that Hill and Adamson possessed not only a profound human sensitivity but also a creative and sophisticated formal sensibility. Person in Photograph: Person in photograph Edward William Lane (British, Hereford 1801-1876 Worthing). Photography Studio: Hill and Adamson (British, active 1843-1848). Date: 1843.The photographic collaboration between the painter D. O. Hill and the chemist Robert Adamson was a fruitful blending of the men's respective talents. Hill's membership in the Royal Scottish Academy gave the business partners access to a clientele of artists who sought photographic studies of posed models for their paintings. This photograph was likely a commission from the academy's president Sir William Allan, who had collected exotic costumes and armor while traveling through Russia. During the 1840s Allan exhibited a series of Orientalist paintings depicting Circassians, an ethnic group from the Northern Caucasus. Here subtle shadows obscure the models' faces, lending an air of mystery and drama to the imposing armor-clad figures. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Robert Adamson. Date: October 4, 1862.Two weeks after he recorded the carnage at Antietam, Alexander Gardner returned to the battlefield to photograph the visit of President Abraham Lincoln. The president made the seventy-mile journey to Maryland to pay his respects to the wounded on both sides and to confer with his field generals. Gardner made about twenty-five photographs, mostly portraits of a strained meeting between Lincoln and General George B. McClellan, commander of the Union Army of the Potomac. He also made this formal field portrait of Lincoln posed with Allan Pinkerton, his diminutive Secret Service chief (left), and General John McClernand. Founder in 1850 of the eponymous detective agency, Pinkerton proved to be a particularly poor gatherer of military intelligence in his advisory role as a spy for the army. Many believe he significantly overestimated the strength of Robert E. Lee's forces--an error that dramatically prolonged the war by contributing to McClellan's extreme caution at attacking the enemy.
