alb3614055 Plaque: Warrior and Attendants. Culture: Edo peoples. Dimensions: H. 18 3/4 in. (47.6 cm). Date: 16th-17th century.During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a remarkable series of works were created to adorn the exterior of the royal palace in Benin City. A seventeenth-century Dutch visitor to the court of Benin, Olfert Dapper, described the sprawling palace complex--with its many large courtyards and galleries--as containing wooden pillars covered from top to bottom with rectangular cast brass plaques. These plaques are understood to have autonomous meaning and to tell complex narratives in relationship to one another. At some point the plaques were removed from the palace facade, as they were no longer there when the British arrived in the region. One scholar has surmised that they "were kept like a card index up to the time of the Punitive Expedition, and referred to when there was a dispute about courtly etiquette."The authors of such works were far more concerned with the communication of hierarchies and status than in capturing individual physical features. These plaques conform to a convention of "hierarchical proportions" wherein the largest figure is the one with the greatest authority and rank. In this example, it is a warrior chief. He is in the center, flanked on either side by soldiers of lesser rank. Regalia and symbols of status are emphasized above all other aspects of the subject depicted. For example, the warrior is shown with leopard-spot scarification marks and a leopard-tooth necklace, which associate him with the stealth, speed, and ferocity of the leopard. As "king of the bush," the leopard is one of the principle symbols of Benin kingship. Additionally, the warrior chief wears a coral-studded helmet and collar, a lavish wrap, and a brass ornament on his hip. In his left hand he carries a ceremonial sword, a gesture of honor and loyalty, and holds a spear in his other hand. The servile status of the figures flanking the warrior chief is indicated by the objects they carry. One attendant has a fan used to cool the warrior chief, the other a trumpet to announce his presence. A third attendant brings a box containing an offering of kola nuts for the oba (king). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb9425151 Emperor's Election, Liber Chronicarum (series title), Double-leaf representation (here in two parts) from the Liber Chronicarum. It shows the German emperor as head of the Holy Roman Empire. He sits in imperial garb, with scepter and imperial apple, on a throne. Before him the imperial coat of arms with the double-headed eagle. His throne is on a podium supported by four pillars. They represent the four duchies of Germany: Swabia (three black crowned lions), Brunswick (two leopards), Palatinate (an ascending lion against a black background) and Lorraine (three eagles on a diagonal bar). The emperor is flanked by his three spiritual and four secular electors. On the left are the archbishops of Trier, Cologne and Mainz. They each have a document in their hands. On the right stand the King of Bohemia, the Palatine Count of the Rhine, the Duke of Saxony and the Margrave of Brandenburg. The first holds a scepter and a large golden cup. The second carries three saucers and a napkin. The third has a sword in his hands and the last a key. The attributes refer to their arch offices in the ceremonial imperial household, successively that of archconfessor, archseneschal, archmarshal, and archchamberlain. The second and third rows contain images of young men, full-length or bust portraits with coats of arms. (54.93 x 31.91 x 3.18 cm) (panel), Tempera on panel, Italy, 15th century, During the Renaissance, altarpieces commonly portrayed biblical scenes, such as Madonna and Child. These two paintings, Saint Sirus and Saint Paul, were likely part of a larger altarpiece made up of many panels, called a polyptych. The presence of a saint on an altarpiece could have a number of meanings. The saint could be the patron saint of the church or city that housed the altarpiece, for example. The key to identifying saints is to look closely at the attributes shown with them. Saint Sirus wears a mitre, the pointed headpiece, and holds a crozier, or ceremonial staff. These attributes indicate Saint Sirus was a bishop. Saint Paul is shown with his usual physical characteristics-receding hairline and long, brown beard; he is also holding a sword, his personal attribute.

alb9415169 Portrait of Fakir Khan and His Sons, c. 1690, 15 3/8 x 11 3/8 in. (39.05 x 28.89 cm) (sheet), Ink, colors and gold leaf on paper, India, 17th-18th century, Fakir Khan, shown seated here with his four sons, was a member of Shah Jahan's court (reigned 1627-58) at Delhi; each sitter is identified in Persian. Royal portraiture was introduced to India with the Mughal conquest in the sixteenth century. Many of these idealized portraits reveal subtle modes of representation through which Indian rulers reasserted their power and achievements. For instance, Fakir Khan's royal status is conveyed by the subtle aureole behind his head, while the family's political importance is indicated by the ceremonial swords, daggers, and shields each member possesses. Finally, the hierarchy within the family is indicated by the size of each figure; the sons are otherwise all treated as miniature adults, with little indication of age based on facial features.
