Bishop Charles Theuret of Monaco laid Saint-Charles's corner stone on November 11, 1879; it was completed and opened on Easter Monday, March 26, 1883, and subsequently declared a parish church on March 15, 1887.

On the promenade it is more than common for one to see the wheels of the carriage of a duchess locked with those of some demi-mondaine from Paris, or a bishop rubbing shoulders with a card-sharper, and a hundred other equally incongruous associations The mansions facing the sea are principally the private residences of some of the regular winter visitors.

This Bridge, which has recently been widened and im¬proved, was long regarded as one of the seven wonders of Wales. It was erected in the 14th century by Dr. Trevor, Bishop of St. Asaph.
