akg5757206 Henry I (876-936), also known as Henry the Fowler, was son of Otto the Illustrious, Duke of Saxony, and became duke himself in 912. He was of Saxon descent, and often was in conflict with his southern neighbours. He became king of East Francia in 919 after King Cornad I's death, named as the king's successor on his deathbed, becoming the first non-Frankish king.Henry's election to king had not been supported by all the dukes, so he warred to bring them in line, especially against Duke Arnulf of Bavaria, who he finally defeated in 921 and forced to submit. He was too weak to impose absolutist rule, and instead regarded East Francia as a confederation of stem duchies, administering his power through counts and allowing the dukes large internal autonomy. He warred against the Magyars, Slavs and Danes, as well as against West Francia over Lotharingia.Henry died in 936, having prevented collapse of royal power in East Francia, and leaving a much stronger kingdom for his successor Otto I. He established the Ottonian Dynasty and is generally considered the founder and first king of the mediaeval German state.

alb3679853 Design for Wicker Cart, no. 919. Dimensions: 6 1/4 x 8 7/8 in. (15.9 x 22.5 cm). Manufacturer: Brewster & Co. (American, New York). Date: 1850-70.Brewster & Company HistoryEstablished in 1810 by James Brewster (1788-1866) in New Haven, Connecticut, Brewster & Company, specialized in the manufacture of fine carriages. The founder opened a New York showroom in 1827 at 53-54 Broad Street, and the company flourished under generations of family leadership. Expansion necessitated moves around lower Manhattan, with name changes reflecting shifts of management-James Brewster & Sons operated at 25 Canal Street, James Brewster Sons at 396 Broadway, and Brewster of Broome Street was based at 372 & 374 Broome Street with a repository (showroom) on 14th Street & Fifth Avenue. By 1874, Brewster & Company had 400 employees and combined warehouse and factory facilities at 47th & 48th Streets and Broadway. Brewster successfully branched out to produce their own automobiles, as well as supplying bodies for Rolls Royce at their Long Island City location. Notable clientele included Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, August Belmont, J.P. Morgan, John Jacob Astor, Andrew J. Cassatt (brother of artist Mary Cassatt), William Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick and Pierre Lorillard. Talented draftsmen employed by the firm included Paul Steinbeck, Herman Stahmer and John Gribbon, the latter teaching at the Carriage Builders and Designers Technical School, which opened in 1880 and was housed initially at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the company finally dissolved in 1923, its last owner William Brewster (1866-1949) donated its archive of design and presentation drawings to the Museum where he served as benefactor and trustee.Of all American carriage manufacturers, none was as highly regarded for design, finish and quality as Brewster & Company. They won many awards for outstanding workmanship, including the Legion d'Honneur (Legion of Honor) at the 1878 Paris Exposition (3rd World's Fair). In appreciation for this achievement the Carriage Builders' National Association presented them with a gold enameled Tiffany & Company plaque and autograph book signed by leading American carriage builders, both now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Merri Ferrell, 2016. alb3631180 Travelers in a Wintry Forest. Artist: Unidentified Artist Chinese, active early 12th century; Traditionally attributed to Li Cheng (Chinese, 919-967). Culture: China. Date: early 12th century.During the tenth and eleventh centuries, majestic trees rivaled panoramic landscapes as sources of artistic inspiration. The hermit-painter Jing Hao (act. 900-930), for example, saw in the pine tree "the moral character of the virtuous man," while the preeminent landscape master Li Cheng (919-967) is said to have painted desolate scenes of winter because "men of virtue are now found only in the wilderness.Travelers in a Wintry Forest follows a well-known composition by Li Cheng as described by Mi Fu (1051-1107) in his History of Painting. The scene is a microcosm of the natural cycle of growth and decay, with the great pine, symbolizing the virtuous gentleman, surrounded by trees ranging from youthful saplings to a shattered ancient hulk. The stoic silence of the wintry forest is matched by the unyielding spirit of the scholar on his donkey--the noble recluse who has entered the mountains to rediscover in nature the moral order that is lost in the human world. (250.8 x 97.8 cm)Overall with knobs: 98 3/4 x 42 3/4 in. (250.8 x 108.6 cm). Date: dated 1342.The paintings of Tang Di, a scholar and official at the Yuan court, range from ink drawings on paper to largescale colored works on silk. A fellow townsman and follower of the scholar-painter Zhao Mengfu (1257-1322), Tang won praise from Emperor Renzong (r. 1312-20) for his part in the decoration of the Yuan imperial palace.Returning Fisherman is a fine example of Tang Di's monumental decorative style. Tang executed the scroll in the conservative brush idiom of the Northern Song masters Li Cheng (919-967) and Guo Xi (ca. 1000-ca. 1090), building forms with the principal motifs of the earlier style, "crab-claw" branches and "billowing-cloud" rocks. Following Zhao Mengfu's example of employing calligraphic techniques in painting, Tang made each brushstroke assertive. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

alb3668002 Crows in Old Trees. Artist: Luo Zhichuan (Chinese, active ca. 1300-30). Culture: China. Dimensions: Image: 52 x 31 5/8 in. (132.1 x 80.3 cm)Overall with mounting: 9 ft. 6 1/4 in. x 38 3/4 in. (290.2 x 98.4 cm)Overall with knobs: 9 ft. 6 1/4 in. x 42 1/2 in. (290.2 x 108 cm). Date: early 14th century. This painting, by the southern artist Luo Zhichuan, demonstrates the renewed interest in the brush idioms of the Northern Song artists Li Cheng (919-967) and Guo Xi (ca. 1000-ca. 1090) that grew after the Mongol conquest forcefully reunified north and south China in 1279. Luo's painting may be read as a bleak commentary on life under the Mongols, for the image of a wintry grove of trees has long been understood as a metaphor for likeminded men enduring political adversity. Similarly, the two male pheasants on the shore in the foreground symbolize scholars living in reclusion, while the varied pattern (wen) of their plumage is a symbol of literary cultivation (also wen). Luo contrasts their stoic endurance with the agitated movement of dozens of circling crows--a reference to petty opportunists. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
