alb3456622 Dedicatory Inscription from a Mosque, dated A.H. 905/ A.D. 1500, Made in India, Bengal, Gabbro; carved, H. 16 1/8 (41 cm), Stone, This dedicatory inscription in 'tughra' script, dated A.H. 905/A.D. 1500, is from a mosque in western Bengal built for Prince Daniyal, a son of Sultan Husayn Shah. The inscription is an outstanding example of Indo-Muslim epigraphy: the regular pattern in which the vertical letters are arranged and the skillfully inserted, bowlike words that structure the pattern are typical of Muslim calligraphy in medieval Bengal and later in the Deccan.

akg7770998 World War II Aircraft. The Dewoitine D.520 was 'a strange aeroplane which looked beautifully but didn't fly beautifully', according to test-pilot Eric 'Winkle' Brown, who also called it 'a nasty little brute'. In addition to a vicious snap-stall, its four wing-mounted MAC 1934 M39 7.5 mm machine guns tended to jam during any kind of high-G manoeuvre - but the 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub was effective, it was the most modern home-produced fighter aircraft available to the French in 1940, and it went on to eventually serve with both Vichy and Free French forces (and as an advanced trainer with the Luftwaffe) as the fortunes of war shifted. Powered by the 950 hp Hispano-Suiza 12Y liquid-cooled V-12 engine, it had a top level speed of about 320 mph. Control was better at high speed and the maximum dive speed when tested proved to be 520 mph with excellent stability in the dive, and the aircraft proved to be a steady gun platform. Production ceased following the Armistice in 1940 but was restarted in Vichy France in April 1941, although production was slow due to a reluctant workforce. Total output of the D.520 from all sources amounted to 905 machines. Illustration (Tim Brown), 2019.

Date: ca. 1860.Brewster & Company HistoryEstablished in 1810 by James Brewster (1788-1866) in New Haven, Connecticut, Brewster & Company, specialized in the manufacture of fine carriages. The founder opened a New York showroom in 1827 at 53-54 Broad Street, and the company flourished under generations of family leadership. Expansion necessitated moves around lower Manhattan, with name changes reflecting shifts of management-James Brewster & Sons operated at 25 Canal Street, James Brewster Sons at 396 Broadway, and Brewster of Broome Street was based at 372 & 374 Broome Street with a repository (showroom) on 14th Street & Fifth Avenue. By 1874, Brewster & Company had 400 employees and combined warehouse and factory facilities at 47th & 48th Streets and Broadway. Brewster successfully branched out to produce their own automobiles, as well as supplying bodies for Rolls Royce at their Long Island City location. Notable clientele included Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, August Belmont, J.P. Morgan, John Jacob Astor, Andrew J. Cassatt (brother of artist Mary Cassatt), William Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick and Pierre Lorillard. Talented draftsmen employed by the firm included Paul Steinbeck, Herman Stahmer and John Gribbon, the latter teaching at the Carriage Builders and Designers Technical School, which opened in 1880 and was housed initially at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the company finally dissolved in 1923, its last owner William Brewster (1866-1949) donated its archive of design and presentation drawings to the Museum where he served as benefactor and trustee.Of all American carriage manufacturers, none was as highly regarded for design, finish and quality as Brewster & Company. They won many awards for outstanding workmanship, including the Legion d'Honneur (Legion of Honor) at the 1878 Paris Exposition (3rd World's Fair). In appreciation for this achievement the Carriage Builders' National Association presented them with a gold enameled Tiffany & Company plaque and autograph book signed by leading American carriage builders, both now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Merri Ferrell, 2016. alb3661604 Three poems from the Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (Kokin wakashu). Calligrapher: Traditionally attributed to Fujiwara no Tameyori (Japanese, 939?-998). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Image: 9 3/16 × 5 9/16 in. (23.4 × 14.1 cm)Overall with mounting: 54 5/16 × 11 in. (138 × 28 cm)Overall with knobs: 54 5/16 × 13 3/8 in. (138 × 34 cm). Date: 13th century.Connoisseurs in the past attributed this work to the hand of courtier-poet Fujiwara no Tameyori. In doing so, they seem to have made a speculative connection between the content of the calligraphic fragment, in this case poems from Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (ca. 905), imaging that it was from an early transcription of this literary classic. This style of court calligraphy did not appear until two hundred years later. Each of the three anonymously composed poems is rendered in two columns. The poem on the far left reads: Tobu tori no koe mo kikoenu okuyama no fukaki kokoro ohito wa shirananIf only my loverknew my deepest feelings, deep as these remote hills, where even the songsof birds can't be heard.--Trans. She is also featured in The Tale of Genji. The design of the box is inspired by a poem from the Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (Kokin wakashu, ca. 905), which is inscribed in silver-inlaid characters on the exterior and the interior of the lid:Samushiro ni koromo katashiki koyo himo ya ware wo matsuran Uji no Hashihime Does she wait for meagain tonight, havingspread but a single robeon her woven rush mat--the maiden at Uji Bridge?--Trans. adapted fromHelen Craig McCullough. alb3639603 Stacked Food Box (Jubako) with "Whose Sleeves?" (Tagasode) Design. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: H. 10 5/8 in. (27 cm); W. 8 7/8 in. (22.5 cm); L. 8 1/4 in. (21 cm). Date: 18th century. The design of this elegant food box, created for a celebratory meal such as a New Year's feast, features kimono racks with draped-over kimonos and accessories, such as amulets, perfume bags, and even an inro (portable medicine case for men). This composition, known as "Whose Sleeves?" (Tagasode), was a popular pictorial subject represented on Momoyama- (1573-1615) and Edo-period folding screens as well as on decorative arts. The Japanese term refers to the beautiful owner of these kimonos, who is absent. It was used in waka, including poems in Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (Kokin wakashu, ca. 905), but the design on this food box also has references to The Tale of Genji via picture-within-a-picture compositions, as the depicted screen and the kimono rack are embellished with scenes from the story.
