akg7315491 Charles III (839-888), more commonly known as Charles the Fat, was the youngest son of Louis the German, King of East Francia, and great-grandson of Emperor Charlemagne. Following the division of East Francia among Louis' sons, Charles inherited Alamannia in 876, but soon inherited the Kingdom of Italy in 876 after his older brother Carloman of Bavaria abdicated.Charles was eventually crowned as Holy Roman emperor in 881, and succeeded his brother Louis the Younger as king of Saxony and Bavaria a year later, reuniting the Kingdom of East Francia. He was forced to deal with the Great Heathen Army, a large force of Vikings that had been repelled from Britain by King Alfred the Great in 878, something he dealt with through assassination and bribery. After his cousin Carloman II died in 884, Charles also inherited all of West Francia, reuniting the Carolingian Empire under his reign.Charles' reunited kingdom did not last long, as a coup in November 887 led by his nephew Arnulf of Carinthia eventually deposed him. He was forced to retire, and soon died of natural causes a year later in January 888, only weeks after his deposition. The Carolingian Empire soon fell apart after his death, split into five successor kingdoms.

Date: ca. 1860.Brewster & Company HistoryEstablished in 1810 by James Brewster (1788-1866) in New Haven, Connecticut, Brewster & Company, specialized in the manufacture of fine carriages. The founder opened a New York showroom in 1827 at 53-54 Broad Street, and the company flourished under generations of family leadership. Expansion necessitated moves around lower Manhattan, with name changes reflecting shifts of management-James Brewster & Sons operated at 25 Canal Street, James Brewster Sons at 396 Broadway, and Brewster of Broome Street was based at 372 & 374 Broome Street with a repository (showroom) on 14th Street & Fifth Avenue. By 1874, Brewster & Company had 400 employees and combined warehouse and factory facilities at 47th & 48th Streets and Broadway. Brewster successfully branched out to produce their own automobiles, as well as supplying bodies for Rolls Royce at their Long Island City location. Notable clientele included Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, August Belmont, J.P. Morgan, John Jacob Astor, Andrew J. Cassatt (brother of artist Mary Cassatt), William Rockefeller, Henry Clay Frick and Pierre Lorillard. Talented draftsmen employed by the firm included Paul Steinbeck, Herman Stahmer and John Gribbon, the latter teaching at the Carriage Builders and Designers Technical School, which opened in 1880 and was housed initially at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When the company finally dissolved in 1923, its last owner William Brewster (1866-1949) donated its archive of design and presentation drawings to the Museum where he served as benefactor and trustee.Of all American carriage manufacturers, none was as highly regarded for design, finish and quality as Brewster & Company. They won many awards for outstanding workmanship, including the Legion d'Honneur (Legion of Honor) at the 1878 Paris Exposition (3rd World's Fair). akg7989794 Koester, Alexander Max(1864 Bergneustadt (Cologne) - 1932 Munich) ""Enten, eine fliegend (wettlauf)"" (""Ducks, one Flying (Race)""). Oil on card. 31 x 53cm. Signed lower right: A. Koester. Framed. Literature: Stein, Ruth und Hans Koester: Alexander Koester (1864-1932). Leben und Werk, Recklinghausen 1988, ill. no. 108, cat. rais. no. 887. The painter Alexander Koester is, besides the few portrait and genre paintings he made, known for his atmosphere landscapes, but especially duck paintings. As an art student the painter from the Rhineland first earned his livelihood with portrait and genre painitngs. After finishing his studies at the Karlsruhe Academy, Koester and his family resettled to the resort Klausen in South Tyrol in 1896. In Austria he dedicated himself to studies of nature. During that time, Koester discovered the ducks his father-in-law kept on his property as a subject. The picturesque animal that would occupy him for the follwoing 40 years thus became the main study subjects of his artistic oeuvre. Thus, the depcition of the ducks appears in hundreds of studies, figuratively in lead, coal, pastel, as well as in oil. The painter first went public at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1899, with his exhibited ducks immediately attracting attention, so Koester developed into a recognised artist endowed with prizes around the turn of the century. Starting in 1908 Koester repeatedly travelled to the Bodensee area to paint water surfaces in still air or storm, sun or shade, in addition to the ducks. After Klausen was declared a war zone during the First World War, the artist resettled to Munich and setteld in Dießen am Ammersee. Although he dedicated himself to the depcition of coastal landscapes and flower still lifes from then on, the subject of ducks still took on an important role in his creative work until his death. After all, the painter is known by the name of ""Enten-Koester"" (""Duck-Koester"").Apart from the anatomically correct depiction of the animals, Koester is especially interested in the depcition of the oscilliating incidence of light on the water. Thus, the representation of the iridescent play of light falling on the water and the ducks' plumage in a harmonic way and taken up again on the horizon, is recurring and characteristic. This is also done in the present work, in which Alexander Koester depicts two ducks in the water, with one bird approaching in flight. The painter reproduces the blue of the water oscilliating in purple and green in a unique way, with the colours being picked up again as subtle light reflexes in the ducks' plumage. The atmospheric play of light stands in addition to the dynamic composition, in which the flying duck is depcited extremly anatomically correct. The work thus stands in the tradition of countless duck paintings with which Alexander Koester went down in as an important painter in art histoy. Literature: Stein, Ruth/Koester, Hans: Alexander Koester 1864-1932. Leben und Werk, Recklinghausen 1988. Art trade, Van Ham.

In GDR (German Democratic Republic; German: DDR) these automobiles were known as "Saporosch" and "Sapo". In Western countries, it was known as "Yalta" (Jalta), "Eliette", or "ZAZ". Most popular were following nicknames of the car: "Stalins letzte Rache" (English: "Stalin`s last revenge") , "Zappelfrosch" ("dithering frog"), "Kremlwanze" (Kremlin bug, Kremlin wire), as well "Russenpanzer" (Russians tank), "Sabberfrosch" (drooling frog), "Soljankaschüssel" (Solyanka bowl), "Chruschtschows Rache" (Khrushchev`s revenge), "T-34 Sport" (T 34 tank, sports version), "Kolchosentraktor" (Kolkhoz tractor), "Taigatrommel" (Taiga drum). Russians nicknamed it "Sapor" (German: "Verriegelung", english: latch, lock), meaning also "Verstopfung" (German) or English "occlusion, blockage". The SAS-965-A Saporoshez is a smarter version of first model SAS 965, and was built 1962 to 1969. First version had 23 horse powers (PS), and 887 cm³ cylinder capacity (German: Hubraum), The new version had 27 PS, since 1966 30 horse powers.
