Após viajar por inúmeros países entre as décadas de 30 e 40, alocou-se em definitivo em Salvador, Bahia, em 1946. Com um olhar sensível e curioso, Verger eternizou em sua Rolleiflex cenas do carnaval, das festas populares, dos trabalhadores, do patrimônio histórico, retratos de personalidades e o culto aos Orixás.A Fundação Pierre Verger (FPV) foi criada em 1988. Com um acervo de mais de 60 mil fotos, a entidade tem como objetivo preservar, organizar e difundir a obra de Pierre Fatumbi Verger, sobrenome que adquiriu após inserção no Candomblé, e que significa 'nascido de novo graças ao Ifá'. A FPV contém um acervo de negativos e cópias e conta com um grupo de técnicos que garantem a pesquisa e a organização do conteúdo. A Fundação está na cidade de Salvador, Bahia, onde Fatumbi morreu em 1996.
