2HHB42E Surrey Institution September 1, 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson British Intended to encourage a knowledge of science, music and literature, the Surrey Instituion was founded by private subscription in 1807, modeled on the Royal Institution which had been in existence since 1799. Suitable premises were found in the Rotunda Building, south of the Thames, close to the Surrey side of Blackfriars Bridge. Joseph T. 2HH7P8B St. Stephen's Walbrook November 1, 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson British St. Stephen's Walbrook stands near Mansion House in the City of London, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and opened in 1679, after the 15th century church on the site was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Within a rectangular plan, twelve corinthian columns support a high dome based onthat in St. Paul's Cathedral. 2HH0YM1 The Hall Carlton House April 1, 1808 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson George, Prince of Wales was granted Carlton House in 1783, and employed the architect Henry Holland to rebuild it. By 1796, the rambling structure had been transformed into a palatial residence that functioned as an alternate court to that centered on the prince's parents, George III and Queen Charlotte, at St. James's Palace. In 1809 mail coaches averaged eight miles an hour, including five minutes allowed to change horses. This office, housed in a seventeenth-century mansion, handled 170,000 to 200,000 letters weekly, sorting them between 4:30 and 8 pm and delivering them between 6 and 11 the next morning. The latter was demolished in 1791 and replaced by Henry Holland's expanded and improved design, seen here. This opened in 1794 but survived only briefly. Parliament's hereditary upper house moved into this space, just south of Westminster Hall, in 1801 to accomodate new members added by the Act of Union with Ireland--known as the 'Lesser Hall,' the building had previously been used for banquets. 2HGYNGP Newgate Chapel 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson Operating under the jurisdiction of the City of London, Newgate Prison stood next to the Old Bailey courthouse and was built just outside the former city wall. Designed by George Dance, the forbidding prison opened in 1778 and was demolished in 1902. In addition to housing debtors, it served as a holding pen for those awaiting trial, and for condemned prisoners. 2HGYM23 St. Stephen's Walbrook November 1, 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson British St. Stephen's Walbrook stands near Mansion House in the City of London, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and opened in 1679, after the 15th century church on the site was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Within a rectangular plan, twelve corinthian columns support a high dome based onthat in St. Paul's Cathedral. 2HGYM1N Surrey Institution September 1, 1809 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson Intended to encourage a knowledge of science, music and literature, the Surrey Instituion was founded by private subscription in 1807, modeled on the Royal Institution which had been in existence since 1799. Suitable premises were found in the Rotunda Building, south of the Thames, close to the Surrey side of Blackfriars Bridge. Joseph T. Parkinson was employed to renovate the decayed structure, and the results were a lecture hall that seated 500 (seen here), lending library and reading room, chemical lab, collection

Both male and female models posed nude, but only men over the age of twenty were permitted to attend these sessions until 1898. 2HGWRHG The Hall Carlton House April 1, 1808 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson George, Prince of Wales was granted Carlton House in 1783, and employed the architect Henry Holland to rebuild it. By 1796, the rambling structure had been transformed into a palatial residence that functioned as an alternate court to that centered on the prince's parents, George III and Queen Charlotte, at St. James's Palace. 2HGWRD1 The Hall and Stair Case, British Museum April 1, 1808 Designed and etched by Thomas Rowlandson The British Museum was founded in 1753 and occupied, as its first home, the late seventeenth-century former private residence Montagu House. Here Rowlandson depicts the main staircase and entrance hall, with a painted ceiling by Charles de La Fosse (1636–1716) depicting 'Phaeton Demanding the Chariot of the Sun.'
