2B013K8 Spain: King Alfonso 10th of Castile (23 November 1221 – 4 April 1284) portrayed as a judge, from the Libro de los Juegos, completed ca. 1283. Born in Toledo, Spain, Alfonso was the eldest son of Ferdinand III of Castile and Elisabeth of Hohenstaufen, known in Spain as Beatriz de Suabia. In the period 1240–1250 he conquered several Muslim strongholds in Al-Andalus alongside his father, such as Murcia, Alicante and Cadiz. In the siege of Niebla (1262) he used cannon to defeat the Muslim defenders, the first recorded use of gunpowder for military purposes by Europeans.

D990EY The role of the Nobility in Spain:Alfonso X (Toledo, Spain, November 23, 1221 – April 4, 1284 in Seville, Spain) was a Castilian monarch who ruled as the King of Castile, León and Galicia from 1252 until his death. He also was elected King of the Germans (formally King of the Romans) in 1257, though the Papacy prevented his confirmation. He established Castilian as a language of higher learning, founded universities (Salamanca and Toledo) and earned his nicknames 'el Sabio' ('the Wise' or 'the Learned') and 'el Astrólogo' ('the Astronomer') through his own prolific writings
