Computer illustration of SPT2349-56 - a group of interacting and merging galaxies that existed in the early Universe, when it was one tenth of its current age. Mergers like this have been observed using the ALMA and APEX telescopes and represent the formation of galaxy clusters, the most massive objects in the modern Universe. Astronomers thought that these events occurred around three billion years after the Big Bang, but these recent observations revealed them happening when the Universe was only half that age. |
