The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky at left. Zodiacal light is visible at far right. Zodiacal light is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. From Earth it is seen as a cone of light along the ecliptic, the orbital path of the Sun, Moon and planets in the sky. Mount Balang (5040 metres) is in Sichuan, China, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Photographed on 13 December 2014. |
