Illustration of crowds outside the Crystal Palace exhibition hall, erected in 1851 in Hyde Park, London, UK, for the 'Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations'. This is a view from the south-east. Opened on 1 May 1851, the Great Exhibition was held here from May to October 1851. The building, designed by Joseph Paxton, was a revolutionary design of pre-fabricated iron and glass sections, rising to a height of 39 metres. It contained 100,000 exhibits from around the world, half from Britain and its Empire. Over six million visitors attended, with 25,000 at the opening ceremony.
