akg7989825 Hofmann, Ludwig von(1861 Darmstadt - 1945 Pillnitz) attributed""Sommerabend am Fluss / Motiv aus Fontainebleau"" (Summer's Evening by the River / Scene from Fontainebleau). Oil on canvas. 45 x 75cm. Monogrammed lower right: LVH. Framed. Verso: On the stretcher repeatedly labelled with a pen, as well as old adhesive labels, among others ""L.v.Hofmann Nr. 9835"". The work by Ludwig von Hofmanns shows numerous elements of different art trends - from historicism to symbolism. In his landscapes he was looking for the atmospheric unison of man and nature. Early on the artist was drawn toward colour, and he combined the idealistic tradition of German painting with the impulses of French avantgarde. As the son of Prussian governor Karl Hofmann, Ludwig von Hofmann studied at the Royal Academy of Arts Dresden since 1883. There he first received a thorough education, which was particularly concerned with drawing. While the late 19th century was dominated by traditional teaching and practice methods of the teachers from the circle of the late Nazarenes, the young painter soon felt constrained in his artistic production. In the course of this, Hofmann left the educational institution three years later and transferred to the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe. As a master student of Ferdinand Keller his development was mainly influenced by the wish for mastering the handling colours that he did not learn in Dresden. After a short study trip in Munich, Ludwig von Hofmann resettled to Paris in 1889 with the intention to continue his studies at the Académie Julian, where he found strong inspiration in the works of Pierre Puvis de Chavennes, as well as Paul-Albert Besnardof. With the reception of their works he came by new subjects, and dealing with the French avantgarde was the main influence helping him to find a new conception of form and colour. A year later he returned to Germany and started working as a self-employed artist in Berlin. With Corinth, Klinger, Liebermann, and Skarbina, Hofmann was a member of the ""Gruppe Elf"" (""Group Eleven""), a Berlin artists' group, that was one of the most important artists' organisations alongside the Munich Secession. Apart from group exhibitions there were national, as well as international exhibitions, and his paintings were thus quickly placed in Berlin galleries. This was followed by several travels at the end of the 19th century, during which he developed an interest in the reception of the art of antiquity that would strongly influence his work. He eventually turned his back on Berlin for good in 1903, as he obtained a position at the Kunstschule Weimar. In the war year of 1916, Hofmann transferred to the Dresden Kunstakademie, where he took on a professorship for Monumental Painting in 1931. The economic situtaion after the First World War allowed him the completion of only one large decorative commission; thereafter he mainly used woodcuts and lithographs as a medium. In his landscapes and figure comopositions, Ludwig von Hofmann creates a festive, cheery world of harmony, youth, and beauty, to which he remained attached throughout the rest of his life. Impressing with a colourful atmosphere, the work auctioned off here thus thourougly stands in the traditon of the works of Ludwig von Hofmann.. Art trade, Van Ham.

alb3657845 The Coronation of the Virgin. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: 19 5/8 x 16 in. (49.8 x 40.6 cm). Date: ca. 1632-33.Rubens made this oil sketch in preparation for a large canvas formerly in Berlin (destroyed in 1945). The final composition was proportionately taller, with God the Father moved closer to the Virgin, who seems to more strongly ascend. In earlier works by Rubens and in Coronations going back to the late Middle Ages, Christ's role is even more dominant than here. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
