Provenance: Since the 1920s in private family ownership, South Germany Roubaud, who according to the important Munich art critic F. Pecht (Die erste Münchner Jahres-Ausstellung 1889, in: Die Kunst für Alle, 1889, p. 20) was particularly interested in the depiction of colourful crowds, painted Central Asian resp. Caucasian markets throughout his biography as an artist. His most famous painting on this subject, entitled 'Market in Vladikavkaz' (95 x 180 cm, Museo Revolltela, Trieste), originated as early as 1883, in the beginning of his artistic career. The elongated format of the 'Horse Market', which just like 'Market in Vladikavkaz' shows the infinty of the steppe passing into a mountainous vastness particularly well, and the masterful depiction of the spatial conditions recall the fact that Roubaud already created his first panorama entitled 'Storming of Achulgo' in 1890. The diversity in the movements of men and animals is reminiscent of the military historical cycle for the Tbilisi 'temple of glory' on which Roubaud worked by order of Alexander III since 1866. In comparison to 'Market in Vladikavkaz' the 'Horse Market' is painted in a slightly freer manner of painting. This fact as well as the character of the signature suggest that the 'Horse Market' can be dated after 1890. This painting can be perceived as a counterpart to the work 'Encampment' (Catalogue raisonné, no. 465), because there are conformities in the composition and in the measurements. One cannot rule out the possibilty that just this painting is concealed behind the 'Markets of Samakand' or 'Horse Markets in Samarkand', which Roubaud exhibited from 1900 to 1921 in Riga, Petersburg/Petrograd and Munich (Catalogue raisonné, nos. 527 - 537). Olga Sugrobova-Roth confirmed that the present work ""Horse Market"" will be registered in the electronic addendum of the catalogue raisonné ""Franz Roubaud"" (www.roubaud.eu).
