20240501_aaa_s197_581 May 1, 2024, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States: Newly erected tents stand at MIT's second encampment, which sits closer to Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. Students at MIT opened a second 'liberated' encampment zone on their 11th day since their disclose and divestment protest began. The primary encampment, also called Scientists Against Genocide Encampment (SAGE), expanded so an adjacent rally organized by the Boston Party for Socialism & Liberation that couldn't access the main encampment could be included. Pro-Palestine protesters dubbed the second encampment as the ''Dahdouh Welcome Center,'' in reference to the Palestinian journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh who has lost numerous family members during the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Police allowed the peaceful rally to continue. Student protesters erected new tents on the second zone hanging long banner depicting receipts from the main tent. The receipt banners protest MITs involvement with the Israeli state to develop weapon and encampment protests demand MIT disclose and divest, like so many other college protests around the United States.
