MG199448 RUSSIA. Moscow. 26 November 2021. The Internet Research Agency, also known as the "troll factory" is a company that manipulates the Internet on behalf of the Russian state. It is linked to Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin and based in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The troll factory had a $1.25 million monthly budget to interfere in the 2016 US election, which focused on sewing political discord by using internet bots to spread fake news and pro-Donald Trump propaganda on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.Internet activist Lyudmila Savchuk is one of a disparate handful of Russian journalists and activists who have tried to shed light on the shadowy operation. She spent two months working undercover at the troll factory in 2015, creating fake social media accounts and writing blog posts meant to sew divisions in the U.S. and turn Russians against Americans.Savchuk worries about the deleterious effect of so much fake information on Russian society:"For the public, it is harmful because we are being brainwashed, We won‘t be able to understand what is really happening. We are put against one another, and we are sliding back into the old ways when we were searching for the enemy among us — our friends and colleagues. That feeling from the Soviet times — I can feel it everywhere."
