(92.7 cm); recto, painted surface, diameter 24 5/8 in. (62.5 cm); verso, painted surface, diameter 29 5/8 in. (75.2 cm). Date: ca. 1449.This commemorative birth tray (desco da parto) celebrates the birth of Lorenzo de' Medici (1449-1492), the most celebrated ruler of his day as well as an important poet and a major patron of the arts. Knights extend their hands in allegiance to an allegorical figure of Fame, who holds a sword and winged cupid (symbolizing celebrity through arms and love). Winged trumpets sound Fame's triumph. Captives are bound to the elaborate support. The three-colored ostrich feathers around the rim are a heraldic device of Lorenzo's father, Piero de' Medici. Painted by the younger brother of Masaccio, it was kept in Lorenzo's private quarters in the Medici palace in Florence. (reverse of birth tray)The armorial device is that of Lorenzo de' Medici's father, Piero de' Medici: a diamond ring with three ostrich feathers and a banderole with the motto SEMPER (forever). The device is much worn and the silver is oxidized. Piero de' Medici married Lucrezia Tornabuoni in 1444 and their first son, Lorenzo, was born in 1449; the two families' coats of arms are in the upper left and right. The tradition of commissioning circular trays or salvers to commemorate a birth derived from the custom of presenting sweetmeats to the new mother. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

akg1558883 MASACCIO:. This picture and 'Pope Gregory the Great (?) and Matthias' are two sides of a single panel that was divided in two. The panel had been one wing of a double-sided triptych in Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. The other wing of the triptych, also sawn in half, showed Saints Peter and Paul on one side and Saint John the Evangelist (?) and Saint Martin on the other. One central panel was of the Assumption of the Virgin while the other showed the Miracle of the Snow, and the founding of Santa Maria Maggiore. Saint John's cross is unusual in that it is attached to a column. This may be a reference to the Colonna arms ('colonna' meaning column in Italian). Pope Martin V, who died in 1431, was a member of the Colonna family and he was probably involved in the commission of this work. Masolino completed the altarpiece after Masaccio's death in Rome in 1428. Egg tempera on poplar, 125 × 58.9 cm, about 1428-9. London, National Gallery. Museum: London, National Gallery. alb3668325 Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saint Anthony Abbot, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Julian the Hospitaler, Saint Roch, and Saint Mary Magdalen?. Artist: Perino del Vaga (Pietro Buonaccorsi) (Italian, Florence 1501-1547 Rome). Dimensions: 8 3/4 x 7 3/8in. (22.2 x 18.7cm). Date: 1522-23.When the plague struck Rome in 1522, Perino escaped toFlorence, where he reimmersed himself in the artistictraditions of his native city, studying the works of Masaccio,Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Fra Bartolommeo. Thisdrawing of the enthroned Virgin and Child surrounded bya balanced and symmetrical arrangement of saints--acompositional type known as a sacra conversazione, or"sacred conversation"--is based closely on admired modelsby Raphael and Fra Bartolommeo. No correspondingpainting by Perino is recorded, and it may be that the youngartist executed this careful study as an exercise rather thanin response to an actual commission. The inclusion of thekneeling saints Sebastian and Roch, whose intercession wasinvoked for protection against the plague, corroborates theproposed dating of the drawing on stylistic grounds to1522-23, when outbreaks of the plague occurred in Romeand, shortly after, in Florence.
