The waves are passing by several pulsars and the Earth (on the right)...Scientists have found evidence of ripples in the very fabric of space-time itself..The motion of black holes and other massive objects through space can create ripples in the fabric of the universe, called gravitational waves. On Wednesday (28 June 2023) researchers announced the first evidence of a background of such long-wavelength gravitational waves in the cosmos. These waves are thought to have been created over eons by supermassive black holes, up to billions of times the mass of our Sun, circling each other before they merge. .The background ripples detected by NANOGrav could help scientists better understand how gravitational waves are created and what happens to them as they propagate through the universe. They could also be used to study supermassive black hole mergers - events that can last for millions of years. Scientists think these mergers happen in most galaxies and influence their evolution...The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) presented the evidence in a series of papers published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. 20230607_shv_z03_886 June 7, 2023 - Space - Astronomers using the Webb telescope discovered evidence of complex organic molecules similar to smoke or smog in the distant galaxy shown here. The galaxy, more than 12 billion light-years away, happens to line up almost perfectly with a second galaxy only three billion light-years away from our perspective on Earth. In this false-color Webb image, the foreground galaxy is shown in blue, while the background galaxy is in red. The organic molecules are highlighted in orange. 20230607_shv_z03_889 June 7, 2023 - Space - Webb found complex organic molecules similar to smoke or smog in a galaxy more than 12 billion light-years from Earth. This sets a new record for the most distant detection of these big, complicated molecules. This is an infographic with a navy blue background. At the top left it says, "What creates an Einstein Ring?" In the center is a diagram. At far left is a drawing of Webb, labeled James Webb Space Telescope. In the center is a foreground galaxy, shown in blue. On the right is a background galaxy, shown in red. Arrows run in a diamond shape from the red galaxy around the blue galaxy, and to Webb. The lines are labeled "Distorted light rays." At the bottom there is another arrow pointing to the right that says "Looking further into the past." which implies the galaxy shown in red is older and farther away than the foreground galaxy, which has warped its light. At far right is the inset Webb image of the Einstein ring. In this inset, on a black background, there are two notable objects. There is a foreground galaxy seen as a big bright blue dot at the center of the frame. It is surrounded by an orange ring meant to highlight the discovery of organic molecules in the galaxy whose light has been bent into a circle. Near the top left of the image, there is also a distant background galaxy represented as a tiny red dot. (Credit Image: © NASA/CXC/SAO/ZUMA Press Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)
