alb5144251 Picture field stele of Neocles and Aristotle, marble, chiseled, Pentelian marble, chiseled, Total: Height: 142.00 cm (supplemented); Width: 38.50 cm; Height: 98.00 cm, Inscription: on the shaft, above the rosettes in two columns: left NEOKLES KIKYNNEUS, funeral monument, greetings, meeting, farewell, father, son, palmette (ornament), rosette (ornament), late classical (Greek antiquity), The straight stele shaft is closed by a narrow cornice on which a semi-oval palmette acroterion sits. On the shaft itself there are two smooth rosettes with a hump in the center. Above them is an inscription consisting of two columns: on the left NEOKLES KIKYNNEUS - on the right ARISTOTELES NEOKLEOUS KIKYNNEUS (the deeper relief background and the uncertain typeface show that an older inscription has been replaced here). Below the rosettes there is a picture field: On the left is a klismos with footstool Neocles from the Attic demos Kikynna. The coat (Greek himation) leaves chest and right arm free. He reaches out his hand to his son Aristotle, who is standing in front of him. He is characterized by a somewhat shorter beard and a firmer chest than the younger one. Around 430 B.C, marble funerary monuments reappear in Athens: reliefs, steles and vessels. They are components of burial districts, some of which are monumental: These terraces have a height of 2 to 4 m and a length of up to 18 m. As a result, the monuments are becoming larger and more elaborate. They serve to commemorate the dead, but also testify to the wealth and need for representation of their patrons, an increasing individualism and a high level of craftsmanship in art. Around the year 317 B.C. they end with the grave-luxus prohibition of the Demetrios of Phaleron; sporadic further use until the 3rd century B.C. can be proven.
