Peruvian quipu. 18th-century pictorial description of a writing system constructed in early-colonial Peru based on a textile recording device known as a quipu. Quipus were used in a number of Andean cultures in South America, such as the Inca. The applications ranged from collecting data, to keeping tax records and recording dates. This hand-coloured engraving is from a 1750 work by Italian nobleman and Prince of Sansevero, Raimondo di Sangro (1710-1771).

Parrot in flight, Muybridge motion study, 1880s. These photographs were obtained by English photographer Eadweard J. Muybridge (1830-1904) in his pioneering work documenting the motion of humans and animals. Between 1883 and 1886, Muybridge made more than 100,000 images using his ground-breaking stop-motion photography techniques. He worked in Philadelphia under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania. The results were published in 'Animal Locomotion' (1887).

Halley's global magnetic chart, 1744 edition. Global sea chart showing the variation in magnetic compass readings as originally published in the year 1700 by the English astronomer, meteorologist and physicist Edmond Halley (1656-1742). This update by William Mountaine and James Dodson, is dated 1744. In 1698 and 1699 Halley, most famous for his work on comets, was given command of a ship by King George III and told to record geographical variations in compass readings. Four inset boxes describe the map in English and Latin, with a map inset at lower left showing part of the Arctic region in polar projection. For the original map, with dedications included, see image C023/8608.

Crystal Palace exterior. Illustration of crowds outside the Crystal Palace exhibition hall, erected in 1851 in Hyde Park, London, UK, for the 'Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations'. This is a view from the south-east. Opened on 1 May 1851, the Great Exhibition was held here from May to October 1851. The building, designed by Joseph Paxton, was a revolutionary design of pre-fabricated iron and glass sections, rising to a height of 39 metres. It contained 100,000 exhibits from around the world, half from Britain and its Empire. Over six million visitors attended, with 25,000 at the opening ceremony. This illustration is from The Illustrated London News.

Volkswagen emissions buyback cars in storage. These cars were bought back from their owners by Volkswagen after the discovery that the company had violated regulations relating to nitrogen oxide emissions. Known as the Volkswagen emissions scandal, the discovery was made in 2015. Cars emitting 40 times the permitted limits had been sold between 2009 and 2015. Here, thousands of Volkswagen diesel vehicles are parked at the Pontiac Silverdome, waiting to be fixed. Photographed in March 2017, in Pontiac, Michigan, USA.

Cassini spacecraft image of Saturn's moons Janus (right) and Epimetheus (left) and the planet's F ring (far left). These two moons effectively share the same orbit, as the difference in their distances from Saturn, is less than the radius of either moon. This configurations causes the moons to swap orbits every four years with the outermost becoming the innermost and vice versa. Saturn's F ring is a narrow ring towards the outer edge of the ring system. The rings are made of chunks of rock and water ice. Image obtained by Cassini's narrow-angle camera on 8th September 2005 at a distance of approximately 1.8 million kilometres from Janus and 1.7 million kilometres from Epimetheus.

Saturn's rings, Cassini spacecraft image. This image of the illuminated side of the rings spans approximately 65,700 kilometres. The rings, which consist of particles of nearly pure water ice, have become contaminated with meteoritic dust over time. It is this dust that causes differences in the rings' colours. Image obtained by the spacecraft's narrow-angle camera on the 26th November 2008, at a distance of approximately 1.1 million kilometres from Saturn.

Green flash at sunset. Setting Sun with the green flash phenomenon forming at the top of the solar disc. Green flash is an optical phenomenon that occurs when the atmosphere causes the light from the sun to separate out into different colours, with green being the most commonly observed colour. The distorted shape of the Sun is due to atmospheric refraction of the sunlight. Photographed over the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.
