(dpa) - The driver of a Polish car has to empty the hideout of smuggled cigarettes in a customs hall in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany, 20 October 2004. The car was previously stopped and searched by a mobile control group at the autobahn near Frankfurt/Oder. After a short inspection a double bottom with about 100 bars of smuggled cigarettes was discovered. Although no costums officers are stationed at the border crossing since the European Union's eastward enlargement they are still active in the hinterland. Along the German Polish border in the German state of Brandenburg four mobile control groups which each has fifty employees are stationed.

An average of about 500 animals was buried this way each month in 2003.
